Taking care of your costume jewelry

Remember that we are not talking about precious materials -such as gold, silver or platinum-, so we must treat our costume jewelry with even more care if we want it to last. Their lifespan is much shorter to begin with, so let's give it some extra love.

This is why I do my best to work with materials that last, even if they look less pretty; or I try to give them a varnish that can prolong their life... But all of this is worthless if you don't take care of them properly.

So here I give you 4 crutial tips or rules to follow to keep your costume jewelry clean and away from any damage. Help me extend the life of my precious! xD

1) Keep it away from WATER Get your jewelry out of the water

Obviously, your jewelry is not going to disintegrate like the Witch of the West if it touches water, but if no drop falls on it... all the better.

The dangerous thing about water and costume jewelry is that it makes the metal baths or the water-based varnish that some of my pieces have, fades away before it should.

If you don't mind this from happening, then go ahead. To be honest, I often choose my materials thinking that people won't listen to me - hence the stainless steel and resin coatings.

Still, it doesn't hurt to be careful... right?

2) Wear your favorite perfume/cologne BEFORE wearing your jewelry First the perfume and then the jewelery

Really, this small detail makes the difference.

Otherwise, the only thing you'll achieve is to shorten the lifespan of metals that are not stainless and that the bath that many others wear fades away too soon.

This way we'll also prevent cords and wires from discoloring too soon and stains from appearing.

3) Wear GLOVES or take off your jewelry if you are going to clean Wear gloves when using cleaning products

Many people already do it, but it's still worth remembering.

Cleaning products are very corrosive, so they will make a thousand and one disasters with your favorite accessories.

Therefore, to avoid greater evils, put on gloves. Or, to the braves, remove the accessories. I'm sure your skin will thank you for it too.

4) Keep it away from DUST Protect your jewelery from dust

There are materials such as resin or semi-precious stones that can be cleaned simply with a damp cloth without any worries. However, if metals like copper get dusty, they oxidize in no time and you have to know how to clean them so as to not spoil them.

Therefore, it is better to prevent than to cure: keep your costume jewelry well protected. In whatever seems appropriate to you, but that has a lid or is covered. If not, you can leave it in its original packaging , it will be a thousand times more protected than outdoors.

Now it is part of our lives, what can we do?

For our health and that of others, it is necessary to use it... but it is lethal for costume jewelry, so be careful.

Pull up the bracelets as much as you can and the rings, if you know they have a coating of some kind, better take them off.

It takes just a few seconds and you'll win more than you'll lose.
